Everybody wants to be known as a smart person. But what does it mean to “be smart?”
The biblical view of “smart” is wisdom. It’s someone who chooses to do what is right even if the immediate consequences may end up being less than ideal.
The smart Christian knows when to be a short-term loser in order to be a long-term winner. The smart father, for example, figures out that it’s better to turn down a promotion and hang onto his children, than to be vice president of a huge company and be a stranger to his children.
We need to be smart about moral decisions, health decisions, the use of time, how to deal with people and everything else.
But how do we get smart? The book of Proverbs puts it simply, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
