I met a man who had been a powerful and influential businessman until a few years ago when he and his wife moved overseas. For two years they lived in a five hundred square foot apartment and gave themselves simply and humbly in Christian service to others.

As I was thinking about this afterwards, I couldn’t help but wonder if the people they were serving had any idea who this couple was and what they’d left behind. I don’t know about you, but I have to confess that I like to be recognized for what I’ve done. But I think that this couple would not have wanted the people they were serving to know who they were. They had chosen to follow Jesus in a revolutionary way.

Jesus served others with humility and obedience. He didn’t need anyone to know how important he was. He just wanted to serve.
