Lady Astor once said, “You can never be too rich or too thin.” In contrast, Jesus said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Jesus said these words to a man who was young, powerful and rich, and although the Bible doesn’t say it, I’m sure he was thin as well. But he wasn’t satisfied; something was missing from his life.
Jesus knew that this man could never follow him until he unloaded his wealth, because he loved his possessions. There’s something about money and possessions that suck us in until they become most important in our lives. But Jesus wants to be number one in our lives. If we let go of things and make Jesus number one, he gives us in exchange, eternal life and the wealth of heaven forever.
